APT 1

I had my APT with Rebecca today and showed her my portfolio and my PDP pieces. I  have e-mailed her several times about my PDP and have been continuously updating and changing it so as to make it right. She said that it all looks good so far and that I just need to finish it so that it is finished completely. This means I will be able to keep improving my essays so that I can get a high mark.
Rebecca also looked at my portfolio and said that the A4 sizing of my portfolio was fitting since images were already becoming distorted and A3 would just make them unreadable. She thought that the work that was in my portfolio was really strong and that just some of the layout needed changing so that it was easier to look at.
I have started to finish off my PDP essays, and have turned the pictures round so that it is easier for people to look at my portfolio.

Clothes Show Live Meeting

I have had a meeting with  my group for the CSL project that we are doing. We have managed to finalise our ideas, however the deadline is next Tuesday and we haven't made the paper mache head of a lion which we are wanting too. The group is sure we can do it, however I am quite worried as the time span is short and I'm concerned we won't be able too.
I have also started to collect the resources for the Digital media, and have started to put them into a presentation for us to show on the Mac screen.
Over all the meeting went well, and we have finalised our idea's and now just need to concentrate on putting them into place.

Matthew Freud

Freud Communications is a public relations firm based in London. Freud Communications was founded by Matthew Freud, who comes from the Public Relations dynasty of Edward Bernays and is the great-grandson of the famous psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud.

Notable clients include Unilever, BSkyB, KFC, Pepsi, Nike, Nestle, Nescafe, British Telecom, AOL, Heston Blumenthal, Live Earth, Comic Relief, MySpace, The Weinstein Company, Sony Pictures, London Development Agency and the Anschutz Entertainment Group.

Freud Communications UK executes PR campaigns utilising, among other tools, editorial placement to obtain positive references to their clients' policies and products on such TV news shows as GMTV, as well as in tabloids and news papers.

I am interested in this type of pr because it focuses on the use of advertisements in paper based options rather than online. For this you need to look at the demographic, the magazines target audience and the income of those reading. It's no good putting a Cartier advert in company magazine for example.

Justin Cooke - " customize the catwalk"

Justin Cooke has created an inventive way of bringing the online social world to the catwalk. He has allowed for people who aren't at the catwalk to view the catwalk show, which is something that has only recently been done. But has also managed to push it a step further by generating more advertising for Topshop through social media (as is always the aim) while giving something back, that is interesting to it's customers. Customers can tweet and find out any information, such as the playlist, the make-up look, the items, if the items come in any other looks etc. He is literally allowing customers to buy the "topshop girl" look, directly off the catwalk.
Justin Cooke is someone I have loved looking at because his style is very innovative and he knows just how to get the most exposure from an event, but still giving something customers can love. If customers don't love what is being done or it has been done before then they can quickly lose interest and simply unlike the facebook page, and start to fall out of the company's social media, which means they miss new offers etc but means that it is harder to pull in that person because they can no longer reach them anywhere in the world i.e. their own house.

PepperandMayne Interview

I have managed to secure an interview for a 3 month placement that I am able to do from home, and so can do as much as I like while still easily continuing with university, and giving me more experience at the same time. I have started to work on a strategy for their brand from the information that I have, which from their website isn't much as the website isn't completely up and ready since they aren't launching until January 2013.
However they have already set up a Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest page. I have found the weak spots in these pages, and have started to put a presentation together which holds some
I have however started to look at items such as Newsletters, other market places, other forms of social media and a few off-line ideas such as pop-up shops, and events that they could go and sell too.
This ties in nicely with my PDP as it will update my skills and also means that I have completed one of my tasks that I have set myself, my placement for 2013 wants me to improve on my social media and this will allow me to do this as well as giving me the extra placement that I wanted to do. It is also perfect since I can do a second placement because this one can be done from home.

Justin Cooke

Justin Cooke has been hired for Topshop after leaving Burberry.
"Arcadia boss Sir Philip Green has hired former Burberry vice-president of public relations Justin Cooke to push forward global expansion plans for Topshop."
"Cooke, who is credited with helping Burberry alter its image, will start work with Topshop in September and is expected to work closely with Green and Topshop managing director Mary Homer to look at oversees opportunities for the business."
"“We’re going to transform it from being a British retailer to a global brand,” said Cooke. “We want to bring the experience of the Oxford Street flagship to a worldwide audience.”

Justin Cooke has created a linking between the real word and socia media via "customize the catwalk"

"The fashion world has for years been among the most social media-savvy industries, and this year is no exception. High street fashion empireTopshop is taking its shopping experience to a new level online this Sunday with a live, sharable, customizable, shoppable, and data-savvy London Fashion Week runway experience.

"CUSTOMIZE THE CATWALK"

For the first time, via Topshop.com, customers will be able to customizeTopshop Unique designs as models strut down the runway by viewing the items in different colors. If they like what they see, viewers can buy Topshop Unique looks directly off the runway while watching the real-time catwalk video. Customers who choose to order items from the catwalk during the show can expect delivery of their items months ahead of industry lead times. "

Language Course

I have identified that in order to have an edge I should try to have a language skill as many people do.
I have applied for beginners French  this will start in January and is 2 hour lessons for 10 weeks. I need however to ensure that this doesn't clash with my Illustrator class. I have gotten a place on the course, this will help me find a Job, as next year when I take my year out, I am going to try and do a second course at an Intermediate level so that I can improve my CV during my placement year.

Photoshoot

We have had our photoshoot today. It seemed to go fairly well, however we fell behind as props had to be gone and brought on the day since nobody had had time on the monday due to a trip, and had forgotten over the weekend. Our model also ran late and decisions such as hair were left to last minute meaning we were running a little late. However the decisions were swift and the hair was done in a simple style so as to make up for time.
Once on the shoot it all went smoothly except our location was too dark, something we had tried to leave to the photographers to figure out since they had more experience and we didn't know. Our photographers also didn't book out the right equipment and were struggling to get hold of pieces, we should have perhaps tried to ensure they were booking out their equipment in advance since everyone was going to do their shoot on the same day.
We also picked quite a hard location since there wasn't much for our model to interact with, which was a shame since she did move quite nicely. We also moved locations after an hour to somewhere much brighter after me and Georgi went and located somewhere with enough light, things went much better after that.

June 2013 Placement Secured

I have managed to secure a 4 month placement in June 2013 with Woodthorpe Communications.

Woodthorpe comms - about us.
"We are a straight talking, result driven PR agency that deliver exactly what we say we will and then some. We pride ourselves in being honest and realistic, always working for the greater good of the client and gaining the best results possible.
With a diverse breadth of experience in the PR industry there is little that we can not accomplish, we set achievable goals and work at the highest level of commitment.
You will always receive a personal service with regular contact and updates. We care about how we can represent your brand with the utmost professionalism resulting in achieving your specific PR objectives."

I  have managed to secure this placement and will be living and working in London. However I now need to find out some more details as to how I will live etc. Such as funding, as I will need to know if my loan goes up or down because I am taking a year out and because I am going to London to work for the year.
I have started to e-mail the finance department to work on this and to gather more information, and maybe see if I can get any extra funding from anywhere.

I also e-mailed to see if there was any points that I could work on. She replied back to let me know that I could work on "Would be fab if you could up your game on social media and get to know some top bloggers. Might also be a good idea to familiarize yourself with press release writing."

Organising my CV

I am trying to organise my CV as at the moment it lasts for 4 pages when ideally it should only be 2 pages.
I am there fore going to try and take parts out that are perhaps not as necessary as other parts. I am not however going to count my references into those 2 pages, as many of my references are long and would probably take up 2 pages in themselves.
I have made sure that my references are up-to date and that they strongly relate to PR and social online media, which means I have gotten rid of 2 of my sales assistant references and one that I had from a horse riding centre which I did for work experience.
I have also changed my skills summary so that it doesn't include skills that I could only use for design such as using a sewing machine, and have put in more relevant ones such as basic Gorkana database skills.
I have also updated my business experience section to include the show that I ran on the 12th/13th.
My CV is still 4 pages, however it is now more detailed and more directed towards the job that I would like to do.

Skills Audit

I have decided to do a skills audit, as I have been applying for a lot of intern ships and have only received 1 reply. In order to increase my chances of getting a placement I am going to try and do a skills audit so that I can fill in any gaps and improve my chances.
Here are the skills that I have listed on my CV.

Communications                                                                 Organisation
Beginners Photoshop                                                         Leadership
Overlockers                                                                           Teamwork
Sewing Machines                                                                Reliable
Pattern Cutting                                                                     Trustworthy
Lasercuttings                                                                                    Approachable
Sonic Welders                                                                      Helpful
Spot Machine                                                                       Beginners Photoshop
Tape Machine
Bullet Machine
Basic Gorkana Media Datebase

So far I have a list that involves skills for Design such as the bullet machine, and skills for PR such as the Gorkana database. I am going to start having 2 CV's so that they can both be more tailed to each role. For my PR CV I am going to list these skills.

Communications                                                                 Organisation
Beginners Photoshop                                                         Leadership
Teamwork
Reliable
Trustworthy
Approachable
Helpful
Beginners Photoshop
Basic Gorkana Media Datebase

From looking at Job descriptions the skills that I need to either improve or get, are:

A language would be advantageous, therefore I am going to try and teach myself French,so that I can put French down as a skill. I will try and buy some books and simple French movie's to start with and may in a few months buy one of the interactive French programmes if I feel that French is something I possibly could learn.

More Experience is needed. Many of the job descriptions are very explicit that you must have experience in the PR sector that they are in such as finance or travel. I therefore this year am going to try and get as many general PR/Social media placements as I can, and when I do my year out try to get some more specialised PR that is involved with fashion so that I can start to move into the area that I want to be in.

For now these are the skills that I am going to work on, I am also going to read some of the books that people doing a Communications degree would read, so that I can try and get some more information and learn more about the different area's in PR.

Online Portfolio

Since much of the work that I have done for my placement's has been online or over the phone, I have chosen to do an Online Portfolio since it will show much better the work that I have done. I can do a printed copy however it's not going to print out nearly as nicely.
I have chosen for now to do my Online porfolio on Carbonmade, it was one of the one's that came up first when I google'd which means that it is popular and so there will be many people to connect with.
http://bethanybritton.carbonmade.com/.
So far I have only put on my work for De'Chars and LuvaHuva. I'm going to try and do work for people on Etsy and charge a small fee to build on my portfolio, I'm going to do this by creating a facebook page, since Etsy don't allow you to e-mail people.
